Lightbulb [Pending] Desktop is suddenly 'scrolling'.....HELP!

My P4 running XP/MCE '05 SP2 was being shut down last night. My 22" Acer widescreen was set for 1680x1050 (the native res). A lone XP update was downloaded and was allowed to install during shutdown. Upon starting up this afternoon, suddenly my desktop, icons and all, is 'larger' than the screen...slightly taller and far wider. To 'scroll' across it, the cursor must reach the edge, then the picture moves toward the opposite side. I can't find anywhere that such a feature can be activated/de-activated. And it's not an issue relating to dual monitor support, as I killed my 2nd, tried other resolutions on the 22" and then came back to find only the native setting has the issue, whether the 2nd screen is active or not. Anybody know what the hay is going on??

on your monitor, go into the menu, and navigate to where it says the current settings. see what it says. then, there should be a setting to automaticcaly adjust the screen, hit it and see if it helps

Wow, this is REALLY odd!

If I set XP's display properties to 1440x900, it displays that just fine.
(Checking the monitor's on-screen menu settings, it correctly says it is at 1440x900)

If I set it to the monitor's native 1680x1050, the scrolling thing comes back.
(Checking the monitor's setting display at this point, it claims to be at 1280x1024.....wha?!?!?)

No amount of rebooting/fiddling with settings seems to have any effect other than described above.

Question Re: Desktop is suddenly 'scrolling'.....HELP!

I went to Acer's site and found this while poking around:

"Product
AL2216W
Issue
LCD monitor resolution issues may occur on computers with Intel 946GZ/965 video chipsets.
Solution
Systems with Intel 946GZ/965 video chipsets, may have issues supporting high resolution display modes on the following monitors.
AL2216W ET.L7409.xxx (especially at 1680x1050 resolution)
AL1916W ET.L5209.xxx (especially at 1449x900 resolution)
A service video driver update for Intel 946GZ/965 has been posted for the following desktops and notebooks.
AS5600
AST690
APFh
If a non-Acer system is being used, the customer should contact their vendor to see if there is a newer version of video controller driver for their system.
Date
06-26-07"

The above doesn't suggest to me that the monitor works for a month, then suddenly goes goofy as mine has. Their info sounds to me like it will or won't work from the start.

Then I checked the Abit site (my MB is an AI7) and found the only chipset mentioned is Intel 865PE / ICH5-R...but is that the video chipset or another chipset?
