Question [Answered] Slow Computer

Hey everyone. It's been a long time since I have been on here.

My mother has a HP computer with Windows XP with SP2. Recently she has been complaining of it being VERY slow. I have done a disk cleanup, defragment and maxed her out on her memory (512). Is there any new tips that can speed up her system? Maybe stop some programs from running in the backround constantly? She currently has 55 processes running, some of which I do not know what they are for.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thank you,

Jivers

Process Explorer (freeware)
Process Explorer for Windows v10.21

if you want to go through the PC-- the XP Services guide in my sig below is excellent. Recently updated for SP2, etc.
You should see an improvement...

Have you done a spyware scan lately?
Is she running a firewall?
Windows updates up to present ?
Defragged the harddrive?

Hi remove anything you don't need from startup

The easiest is to do the following:
1. start --> run --> msconfig
2. Click on the "startup" tab (furthest right)\
3. Unclick any items you don't want to load when windows starts.
