Wow, that looks like it could work. My only problem is step 7 as the notebook HDD is connected to my desktop via USB adaptor. I copied the whole bootdisk onto the notebook, inserted it, but not working.

Ah, use the app to put the bootdisk on to the floppy drive and boot from that on your desktop.

This will not work anyway I will have to dig the DOS USB drivers out for ya, I'll dig them out tonight and document things a little better for ya and hopefully provide what ya need on a bootable cd.

Sorry about that, i just assumed it was connected via a 2.5" - 3.5" IDE adaptor.

When connecting a 2.5" - 3.5" IDE adaptor, is there a diference between using a desktop
with an AT ot ATX PSU? I bought an IDE connector, hooked it up to the AT machine & it fried the notebook HDD

Hey there mate.

It shouldn't have done that, as far as I know there were no voltage differences on the molex connector between AT and ATX.

I'm still trying to get a way to do this with it attached in a USB enclosure but I will get it done.

Sorry for the delay

Try making your main partition 7gb in size, we can make this bigger later, but I think that is whats causing your error.
