Angry [Pending] Internet connection problems....

Hi all

New to this forum so I apologise in advance for this post and if it lacks enough info. I am currently running xp with sp2 on it. Single PC with an ethernet line to a cable modem. My wife sometimes connects to a remote computer at work.

I was connected to the internet fine until last week when it would only work intermitently. Seemed to go out during the day only. Finally it went out Friday for good. Lights on the modem all continued to flash even though I didnt have any internet. Talked to the local cable company and had different answers from different techs. None of them could understand how I had all the lights working but still no internet. If I disconnected the ethernet line the computer would tell me that a network cable was unplugged so it still saw the modem. One tech thought it was signal/cable problems. Checked that by plugging the line into a tv and got the lower channels clear as a bell. When I informed the cable company of that they decided that it was a modem issue due to my ip address having an extra 2 digits at the end. They claim that this is usually only when a router is in use (which isnt the case).

Exchanged the modem at the cable company store and tried again. Now none of the lights are coming on and the power light just blinks on and off. When I do an ipconfig I am getting no default gateway or dns server. Tried renewing the ip addresses and refreshing them but still nothing. I have done some ping tests using google and am getting nothing. I tried to repair the network connection and windows told me that the repair wored but I am still getting nothing. I even tried switching the to a usb connection but that didnt change anything either (although it was recognized by my computer I couldnt connect to the internet and the modem still flashed its power light on and off.) I have reset the modem for each change as well.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to include everything that I did try. Thanks for any help!!!

Welcome to the site bigbran.

Sounds to me like a driver issue (possibly chipset). Can you tell us the make and model of your PC?
