Hi-- you use a lot of space for what?
Not trying to be nosy-- but if you have a lot of Video games-- and want to get more, and run them well-- you would need different hardware than just say "storage" for a lot of pictures/videos/music

You can get more bang-per-dollar if you build it yourself...you also get better-quality components this way-- because you would carefully research what you want before you buy-- and you would benefit from other people's knowledge.
Plus all of your software would be owned by you personally-- not licensed to a company. This means that you keep the software for your next PC, too. This reduces overall cost on some software items.

If you don't want to bother with this method-- there are many very good places where you can order one customised to some degree to fit what you want to do. Depends on how much of a hurry you are in.

Personally-- I like to absolutely control all aspects of a build-- I save money... and learn-- every time. So I build my own.

3000 will go quite a way for a new machine if you build it-- of course if you "must have all the very latest" gear-- it will go fast.

You can 'emulate' (Run in a virtual machine) but on the newer intel machines you can also just run windows.

Your decision all depends on what you need and your personal prefference.

Do you do anything intensive in a particular area? What exactly will the computer be for?

If you are just surfing/emailing/playing the odd mp3 you don't need a $3000 machine, if on the other hand you're video editing and such that would influence what you would put in there.

Ah, in that case I'd say go with something sorta mid-high end, don't go too crazy with it as it can get very expensive very quickly and it's probably overkill.

Say Core2Duo, 2g ram, and 8800GTS.

I'm a little biased on the subject as I always have and always will build my own PC's but to be honest that's the best way to go because not only will you save money but you know exactly what has gone in to it and you will get better warranty then the bog standard offered by OEM's. If you do not know how, pay someone to build it for you, it should not cost too much.

As for specific brand recommendations on hardware I'd say
  • Ram: OCZ [Lifetime warranty and I've had nothing but good stuff from them]
  • Motherboard: eVGA [They offer a step up program whereby if you're not happy with what you bought, send it back and make up the difference and they will trade it, lifetime warranty]
  • Graphics: eVGA [Simply because of the lifetime warranty and they make good cards, some may have different suggestions]
  • Hard drive: Seagate [5 year warranty and reliable]
  • Soundcard: M-Audio [Just fantastic, I love mine]
If you want I could spec something up for you on your choice of site

Hope this is helpful
