Default [Answered] Having issues with hard drive.

Let me just start by saying I use Windows XP professional SP 2, and I use Norton Goback. I've had this computer for more then a year now and used Goback on a semi-frequent basis to restore the computer after a virus or something similar caused damage to the system.

Last night, while playing a video game my computer suddenly hung up. I restarted it and when it came to the Goback screen, it said that Goback restarted the computer to prevent serious damage from taking place. I click 'ok' to let it finish starting up and as soon as it's finished it restarted again, and gave the same message as before. I tried it again, and I still recieved the same message, and was unable to gain control of the computer. I knew what I did next may have been risky but it seemed like the only choise I had. I set it to go back about two hours, when I knew the computer was working fine. At 5% of the "copying sectors" part of the goback, it stopped, gave an error message and restarted. After it restarted it seemed to resume the goback from the point it left off, and finished it.

Well, I regained control of my computer, but I knew that there may have been damage done to the hard drive, so I ran Norton Disk Doctor, and it gave me a list of errors. I ran it again, with "fix errors" checked, and set it to do a surface test. I restarted and it performed the tests. After this I re-ran Disk Docter and it gave a different set of errors. I tried the same thing again. Now I've re-run it the third time or so and am getting another set of errors.

Here's the a report from the last time I ran Disk Docter, from about an hour ago, just to give you an idea:

Why thank you!

I should probably clearify by saying that the computer itself seems to be functioning alright. I just don't know now if it has, perhaps, entered a state of instability. I and my family have backed up as much stuff while it seems to be working. It's just the reports that Disk Docter keeps giving are worrying.

Hello Diogenes, welcome to PCHF.

This *could* be signs of early HDD failure from what your describing, does your PC ever freeze at all, during bootup or when working on the PC? What were the results of the surface test?

Hello madmonkey. Thanks.

The surface test came out clean.

We've been having occasional freeze-ups, sometimes with blue screens telling me that certain proccesses where stoped in order to prevent serious damage to the system. But these freeze-ups only occur about twice a month.

About two months ago we had a bad thunder storm. Lightening came in through the phone line and burnt out our motherboard. But everything seemed to be working fine after it was replaced. And I seem to recall getting these errors well before the storm.

Hi Diogenes,

I love Blue screens!! When you receive a blue screen of death, a dump/log file is created with details of exactly what was going on at the time of the crash. Take a look at BSOD's on my signature, it describes how to post a few of these logs back here.
