Question [Answered] boot.ini

Hi All

I have been having a few problems with the incorrect Operating System being recognised on my computer. I have Windows XP Home installed build 2600.with SP2
This Home edition was preloaded on my computer. I do have 2 partitions but only 1 appears to be in use. partitions: C (NTFS)
Could someone please tell me whether my boot.ini is setup correctly ( not so according to the Microsoft website.) Mine reads as follows:
boot loader
timeout=5
default=multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partitions(2)windows operating systems
multi(0) disk0) rdisk(0)partition(2) windows ="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/fast detect/noexecute=OptIn
It is the "no execute-OptIn that worries me.
Also disk quotas are disabled
If you could advise me on this, I would be grateful Thanks in advance.

Hi snoopy....

Partition(2) indicates that you have 3 partitions....0 being 1, 1 being 2 and 2 being 3
(confusing much?)

That is a strange boot.ini
you shouldn't need the /noexecute part, that's for sure.

Hi Snoopy, sorry for the late reply.

I can't really suggest how to edit the boot.ini. Purely because i don't know anything about your computer, or how it's setup. Editing the boot.ini should only be done if you're ready to reinstall windows, as if it breaks you might just have to do that.

Hi GaRHar
Thanks again for your reply. I reformatted my Hard Drive two days ago before reading your post. I checked the boot.ini again once I had reformatted and I found the exact same set up for the boot.ini . as before I had reformatted.
I know for sure I do not have three partitions!!
I think I will contact Sony (my Vaio computer) and ask them for the exact settings.
I'll let you know if I ever recieive a reply from them!!
My sincere thanks to you
Snoopy

If you are using OEM provided restore disks that is probably 'normal' as MadGamer said there is probably atleast one of them for recovery.

Also, the /noexecute switch isn't anything to worry about, it enables Data execution prevention and IIRC will be/has been present in all bootloader config files as of SP-2.

If you don't have any problems booting I would just leave it as it is.
