Question [Answered] Can not copy files from old XP profile

Hi everyone, I am new here and need some help with opying/moving files from an old profile to a new profile.

I have a PC with a 250GB HD in it. It got too full. So I went out an bought a new 320 HD, made that the primary C: drive and put a new install of Windows XP Pro. Made the old HD the D drive. Created the same profile names in the new Windows install as the one I had in the old 250 HD, thinking that I will be able to simply move the files from the old HD to the new one after the installation is complete.

Then I went to copy the files from the old HD which is now the D: drive to the new HD. To my surprise, I can not access the files in any of the profiles in the old HD. Now it make sense to see why it is not possible - security to prevent your data from being copied over by someone else.

Now the question is how can I get that data from my old profile to the new profile? This being a PC there must be a way! Please help.

Thanks in advance.

Default Re: Can not copy files from old XP profile

Hi Reg,
Three possible solutions I see - go back to the original drive as the main drive and run the transfer wizard. Then Put the new drive back and import the transfer file. Eve easier is to use the disk migration tool that should have come with the new drive. You should be able to make the new drive an exact replica of the old drive. If no migration tool came with the new drive, you can download a trial of Acronis True Image Backup at Download HDD ghosting, data backup and restore software for home and home office PCs and create a clone of the old drive on the new drive and get the same results as the migration tool. (I use a registered version of Acronis as my backup solution!) Lastly, you can change the permissions on the old drive if you have the security option available in folder options. You can enable the security option by going to to Folder Options, View and unchecking the box next to "Use simple file sharing". Hope this helps!
:-) The Bernster
