Default [Pending] converting avi/xvid to dvd

Hi all
i,m looking for a bit of advice on converting.no matter which proggy I use to convert ie...winavi/nero/convertxtodvd it gets to between 30 and 50% and completly locks up the computer.my pc is configured as follows 1st hard drive with operating system is master this is on its own on ide 1 then second hard drive secondry master and dvd drive is slave both on ide 0 tried switching second hard disc and dvd drive but does the same thing any advice on best configuration would be appreciated

just an update just disconnected everything except my primary hdd and tried to convert again and still got the same problem so cant be configuration issues are there any cocecs which may resolve this?I have the k lite codec pack installed and thought this would cover everything???????????????BANGING MY HEAD OFF THE WALLS NOW....LOL...

still having same problem but installed all software on my daughters comp and everything works fine on that one i,m starting to think it may be a m/board problem now
