Default [Fixed] Issue with DOS commands

Hi there guys (and gals ofc )

Having an issue with my PC atm and hope i have come to the right place. Im usualy fairly on the ball with this type of stuff, but this issue has me stumped. Ok, here goes. basically I am trying to assign a static Ip to my computer, but to do so I need to be able to run the ipconfig/all command in DOS. However (and heres the issue) whenever i try to do so I get the error message "ipconfig is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." Upon further investigation, this is exactly the same if i try to run any command in DOS, for instance I tried running "netstat -n -p tcp -b | more" as im having some latency issues and wanted to run a tracer, but that just gave me exactly the same response.

Any help is ofc much appreciated, as I am stumped. Cheers in advance,

Stompy

Hi Stompy, welcome to PCHF.

What if you try the command:

c:\windows\system32\ipconfig

?

Yup that works, and comes up with the requred info. How come I have to type in the c:\windows\system32\ part to get it working? shouldnt I just be able to run ipconfig straight away without that?

Yep, it just means that your environment variables for that folder are missing, but it's an easy fix.

Go to My Computer, Control Panel, System and click on the Advanced tab.

At the bottom of the window, click on Environment Variables.

Under "System variables", you will see an item called "Path". If it's not there, press New, however, every system will have this by default. Click on Edit.

Scroll to the end of the Variable value. Each value is seperated by a ;

At the end of the line, add %SystemRoot%\system32

Press OK, and away you go!

Yay! thats working absolutely fine now. Thanks sooo mch for ur help. When I opened up the Environment tab and checked out the Path section, the text you advised me to add was already there, but there was a load of text concerning "image converter plus", and what looked like a URL, after it. I just deleted that extra text, taking it back to the original %SystemRoot%\system32 and it is now working as it should.

Again, thanks a bunch for your help, you're a star! (smiley overload)
