Default [Resolved] XP running very slow

Hi all,

The other day my PC was making a weird clicking noise and the LCD display on the front was fading in and out. I thought that this was a power problem, so I disconnected everything else from the same power point. It stopped the clicking.

Next time I start up the PC, windows loads VERY slowly, and eventually starts, but it takes time loading the startup programmes (it used to take a minute max, now takes 4 or 5). When I try to play music through different media players (winamp, WMP, iTunes) the music is often slow and distorted. It takes forever to load Firefox, and just as long for MSN to complete signing in. Whenever anything is being done, the HDD light on the front is constantly on, even when opening the start menu.

In the task manager, svchost.exe appears to eat up more resources then usual.

Cheers.

UPDATE: I don't know if it's related or not, but when I try to play music it won't work. Winamp gives me the error:
Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device in configuration. Error code: 88780078
The only thing I have installed in the last few days is the latest DirectX from the microsoft website.

1. Suggest you download and run - CCleaner.com
This will clean out your unneeded temp files from your hard drive.

2. Go to your Device Manager.
Click on and Delete (with the Delete key) any devices that have a ? or !
If the Device Manager has an "Other" category, open it and Delete any devices in the "Other" category.
Reboot.

3. Check your system drivers by clicking on Start>Windows(Microsoft) Update. Click for Custom updates. Install any drivers or critical updates indicated. Second, recommend you click on DriverAgent.com Fix Your Driver Problems Instantly with Driver Agent and check the status of your non-system drivers.

Good Luck...

Thankyou very much, both of you.

Gandalf, I tried what you said, with no luck. Everything appears to be normal.

The fact that this came on so suddenly makes me think it could be hardware related, maybe HDD. I have a SATA drive connected to an IDE port using a SATA-to-IDE converter.

Pre-work logs are here too!

Thanks.

I've been told that it could be a PSU problem. Comments anyone?
