Alrighty, sorry I took so long...i'm only able to do a search here and there (at work at present, and there's a few major things going on here that require my full attention when it happens)
However...I have found this...
Obvious problem...Windows Update fouled up your system, so uninstalling the updates should fix the problem.
However, the most common cause of this problem is a faulty hard drive, with a "bad sector" on the disk. This could have been there forever, and only now, since the updates were installed were they found.
I've found these set of instructions from another person who had this problem...it worked for them with Windows 2000, and that's the same operating system...without the fancyness
Give them a shot and let me know how you go.
From the various searches I found on google, it seems it has something to do with
your "settings" being too large. I had downloaded a 200+ MB file with Internet Explorer.
Here are the steps I took to remedy the situation.
- Log into the profile that's corrupted. Windows will use a temporary profile.
- Open Windows Explorer. Enable "Show Hidden Files." The temporary profile, by
default, does not show hidden files. (To enable "Show Hidden Files", go to Tools
menu -> Folder Options... -> View tab -> Click "Show hidden files and folders")
- Go to "C:\Documents and Settings". In that directory, you should see your profile,
but it has a ".bak" extension to it. Go into the profile name directory -> Local
Settings -> Temporary Internet Files -> Content.IE5.
- Empty the contents of all those weirdly name directories under Content.IE5.
- Reboot. You get all your settings back, including
desktop and screen saver stuff.
My guess is that the 200+ MB file in my Temporary Internet Files caused this problem.
I don't know why it should, since I had downloaded over two dozen other ~200 MB
files from that site with Internet Explorer, and had no problem occurred with those
(those weren't in the temp internet files). Normally, I use Opera, so maybe my settings
on IE weren't correct or something.
If the cause of this problem really is the file size, then that would be somewhat
disconcerting. However, I cannot think of another cause based on what happened to
me and what I did to fix it.
