I tried to run the cpu burn in, but it won't do anything. When I run the program, a window comes up asked how long to run. I put 2 in the hours and it won't let me put anything in the minutes. Then when I click start, it just sits there, doesn't run, doesn't error, doesn't do anything. I tried in safe mode first thinking maybe it doesn't run in safe mode, then I booted normally and tried with the same results, then my pc locked up... The file I download specified all windows version except for xp... Any suggestions...

Yes, I noticed that it didn't list as working in XP, but I figured it would probably be compatible since it supports NT, and Windows XP uses the NT architecture.

Okay, my brain is pretty much out of ideas, so it's time to call in the troops. *bugle*

Hi guys, Rod, don't give up man, you've been doing really well.

Reading through this thread, we got to a stage where CPU problems were a likely candidate. Since then, Rod has been trying to test that theory. It's strange that none of these programs work also. When you open up the PC SRose, can you see the CPU fan spinning? Are there any signs of dust buildup? And finally, does it make any difference if your problems if you leave you PC case open?

One other thing that i believe has been overlooked...
A couple of the blue screens were pointing at the LAN driver..and since there was a point where everytime you loaded IE....could be faulty onboard LAN...
Might be an idea to get a PCI NIC (very cheap) and disable the onboard one through the BIOS...see if that helps at all.

Another thing I just found on my desk about this... I made a note-paper about this thread and forgot! How stupid of me. There's pretty much only one thing on it I haven't done, though. I was going to have you check for signs of physical damage on the CPU and apply new thermal compound between the CPU and Heatsink.

Monkey -- The cpu fan is spinning and there isn't any dust buildup, as I periodically clean out my pc's. The case open doesn't help either, I've had it off since my problems started thinking it was possibly heat related and there hasn't been any change.

Garhar -- I can put in a PCI NIC, I have spares lying around I can use. I will let you know how this works out...

Rodent -- After the above step, if it doesn't work, I'll take a look at the cpu itself and apply more thermal compound...

Wow!!! I feel so special as to have all this attention...

It acutally does make me feel a little good that it is taking so long to diagnose this problem because I like to think of myself as pretty computer savvy and I am usually able to diagnose/fix other problems I've come across... However, I would much rather my pc be working and not have to mess this all...

Thanks so much for everyones help and effort with this problem. I'm willing to stick with it as long as everone else is!! By the way, it may be a few days before I'm able to do the above checks and repost. I'll let you all know as soon as I can.

Thanks again,
Scott
