Default [Resolved] installing xp over millenium

When checking compatability to upgrade my office pc (hp pavillion genuine intel, intel celeron processor 127.0 MB ram) from windows Millenium to windows XP I receive the message Windows XP does not support upgrading from Windows Millenium to Windows XP home edition. set-up cannot continue. What does this mean as far as my options go please.

Thanks,
Swizzleskin

Upgrading from ME to XP is not recommended as you will have problems later on. You'll need to perform a clean install of Windows XP to resolve the problem you are experiencing.

Hi Swizz,

This basically means you will need to install a fresh copy of XP.

- Copy any files, documents, music, pictures, video's e.t.c. you need to keep onto another drive or CD.
- Make sure you have the installation disks for any software you will need to re-install after XP.
- Insert your XP setup CD when you PC starts and go through the setup process there.
- After the install of XP is complete, go to HP Support & Drivers and download any remaining drivers you need for your HP Pavillion.

Default Just so I'm clear

I just want to make sure in your instructions that I do not need to format the hard drive (the transfer of any files I need to keep is because the installation of XP will cause problems, or because I am going to erase my C: drive?) Am I better off formatting the computer and starting over? (It's not an issue if that is what I have to do.) I believe I have transfered everything to my USB drive, is that sufficient for transferring, or will the fact that it was ME cause problems when I attempt to return them to the C: drive?)

Thanks again,
Swizzleskin

Since you have backed everything up that you want to keep, then you can go ahead and perform a clean install of XP.

Default sorry again

Does clean install mean just pop in the disk and select install XP, or does that mean format and start again. sorry for my lack of punctuation, I can not get my keyboard to do apostrophes or question marks instead I get è and É I know the keyboard is set to french but I have already changed it and it does not care. The current keyboard setting is Canadian Standard so beats me.

Thanks again (and again)
Swizz
