Default [Pending] serious problem with xp and Norton 2006 system works

Can any members please help me???!!!! I recently thought I got a bargain when I purchased Norton System Works 2006 for $10. I tried a quick install and have now effectively turned my XP pro PC into a paper weight. I cannot boot up at all, cannot open in safe mode and have not been able to rectify even after going to Norton for help. The help tech was very nice and patient but I was unable to get to where she gave instructions to go. One major problem appears to be help she advised for something called "FIXMBR" with instructions to boot from XP cd,select Repair select an installation you want to log on to, Log in as administrator then at the \\WINNT command prompt type fdisk\fixmbr press enter then when FIXMBR is complete type exit, then enter remove CD and reboot.
I have two issues- one i see Fdisk there and I have many thousands of dollars worth of software I do not want to loose- however none of this is on the C drive which I think would be the only one effected...so I am a bit confused ...but the main thing is loging on as the administrator requires putting in a password. I do not remember setting up a password when i did this XP Pro install ! I try not to use them when I do not have too; I am older and remebering lots of passwords or sometimes even one( as in this situation) is a problem. Nothing I have typed in works or is recognized and I keep going around in circles and not able to do a repair or a new install ( of XP) . You should also know that something( new and oh so wonderful!!! (sarcasm intended) called "Norton Go Back" is the culprit which caused all this . You should also know that the tech aid also said "this happens due to a corrupt NTLDR and /or NTDETECT.COM file and wanted me to copy the files with this command from the XP CD : copy e\i386\ntldr c;copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c: .
However how am i supposed to do that without being able to get to the dos prompt and without having the password to log onto the windows installation...
Am I befreft of my PC and all its contents????!!!!! I am willing to scrap this PC and build another( I have built several) but can I then get the data from the other drive partitions?????
I am most appreciative of any help
my email address is wanderingalien[at]gmail.com
Thank you in advance!

This is not about your question but I would suggest that you don't put your mailadress in your post because of the possible spam you can get.
A way is to type your mailadress not as:
someone@microsoft.com
but as:
someone(at)microsoft.com
