Default [Pending] Used System Mechanic 6.0- Now hangs during startup

I used System Mechanic 6.0 to clean up hard disk and clean out registry. Now during boot up of XP Home SP2 I get to my desk top but some of the programs which normally load at startup do not load and I can't launch any of the apps that are on my desktop. My cursor is just an hourglass when passed over the taskbar. I can't get into safemode by pushing F8 during startup and I can't get to system restore through the Start/Programs menu. Also, I have to shut down by holding the power button. I know that a file of registry changes was created by SM 6.0 in the documents folder but I can't launch that program to undo the changes. Can anyone offer any advice to help with this situation?

Thanks,
Salt_fly

Hi salt_fly, welcome to the PCHF.

The first thing that comes to mind is a system file check...Start -> Run -> sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and /scannow)
If that doesn't work...a repair install may be the only way to go.

Unfortunately, I cannot get to the run command because moving the cursor over the start button only results in an hourglass.

What about doing a <Alt><Ctrl><Delete> and shutting down the process that is causing the problem? It might be running at over 50%. That should stop the hour glass.

We make a good team. You handle the big ideas and I've got the little ideas.
