Question [Answered] Ctfmon.exe

Hi guys, my friend just got a huge problem on his laptop. Last night, the Ad-ware software asked my friend to allow or blow ctfmon.exe. Since he doesn't know anything computer, he clicked block. Now, I don't know if that is the cause of the problem, all the icons aren't working. It saids Windows cannot open this file. I tried to restore it from what he has done from Ad-ware, it's not working. I tried to do a system restore or chkdsk but windows can't open the file. I can't click anything on the menu or any icons. I tried to use my OEM XP to repair or format it, but it can't find the hard drives. Anyone help plz?

Blocking ctfmon shouldn't cause this problem. In fact I have it disabled on my system, because it hogs system resources.

Can you still access Run at least?

Normally blocking things shouldnt cause failures, but can you try booting into safe mode? if you can then you should be more easily able to perform any repairs that need doing.

Also, i used to have svchost.exe disabled because it was a resource hog, and even though it hosts half the software on my pc it still ran fine

If you would like to disable ctfmon, Microsoft have an article about how to disable it: How to turn off the speech recognition and handwriting recognition features in Office XP

It works for Office 2k3 as well.
