Hello Johncv, Welcome to PCHF.

- First of all, make sure that the USB keyboard is actually working by testing it on another PC.

- Go to My Computer, Control Panel, System, Hardware tab, followed by Device Manager. Right click on your PC name and Search for hardware changes.

You have can more than one keyboard plugged in at any one time if you need to.

Have you plugged it in after you were fully logged in?

Thanks for the help but I cant log in at the log in screen cannot type in the password, so I cant get into windows with the usb keyboard I know the keyboard works have tried it on another computer I know the usb ports are ok cause once I log in with the ps2 keyboard all usb ports work. Not sure if you have to load drivers for the usb keyboard once you are in windows using the ps2 keyboard . Seems like windows 2000 doesn't load usb drivers

Hi John, what were trying to say is leave your ps/2 keyboard plugged in until you have installed your USB one. Log on using your ps/2 keyboard, and then plug in your USB (leave the ps/2 still plugged in if you like). You should then receive a "found new hardware" message. If not, double check Device Manager and scan for new devices.

Windows 2000 has no problem with USB devices. There was greater support for USB devices with Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 which you can download from update.microsoft.com but these were mainly for USB storage devices.

Also, make sure you have installed your Universal Serial Bus controllers. If installed correctly, you will see this as the last catigory in Device Manager.
