Default [Answered] ms updates

hi guys

ok may be in the wrong forum but taking a chance

have a problem with XP installing updates, basically i had to do a repair installation, then i installed SP2 and then tried to update, however after it downloads it then says installing, then i get the unable to install updates...i have tried removing all traces of pre repair, and fresh sp2 and updates but same thing. the pc has 4 users, 3 of them admin accounts...i have since removed 2 from admin rights to make life easier, but i cant see that having more than 1 user makes any difference to windows updates.

any one been in this position before and manage to rectify the problem?

cheers
Steve

Hi adreval,

Can you tell me what error message you are getting why you try to do the Windows Updates?
Do you get to install SP2 and then goto the Microsoft Updates page? Or is it before you get SP2 installed?

hi GaRHaR

i get no actual error message. I have installed SP2 successfuly, no problems at all, then once i have rebooted i goto windows update, the updates download with no problems, it starts to install and then i get "updates were unable to be successfuly installed" and "the following updates were not installed" like this http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/z/20060...nupdate_08.PNG

and thats all the updates since SP2

hope this helps

Ooohhh...i see what you're saying

Alot of those updates will have been superceeded by a newer security patch.
I'll get one of the security techs to go through the log for you, just to be certain.

Sit tight

hello adreval:

lets' start with this:

Please Download MsnVirRem.exe to your desktop from one of the following mirrors.
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click MsnVirRem.exe to run it
  • Once open, click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<Your computer will now be scanned for Infected Files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • After the Reboot, you WILL receive file not found errors (usually 4) please acknowledge them and continue.
  • A Message should popup from MsnVirRem if not, double click the program again and it will finish
Please Post the contents of C:\msnvirrem.log along with a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks,

v
