I had actually read about this years ago-- it was for a frozen spindle-bearing-- and it actually can work for long enough to recover some data files in some cases--not all.
Better than hundreds for pro data-recovery-- say, if it was a server drive-- with thousands of emails on it--important, but not the end of civilization... if it fails totally.

Very cool, Wolfeymole
Should that have been concluded with "Pardon the pun"?

This is what I was driving at (again no pun intended) as something that could be used as a very last resort, and has been known to work.

The odds of something like that working are so small I would not recommend it to a member. If a drive contains no needed data and is in that damaged a condition, then I would still recommend using it as an anchor or paper weight. Drives are so relatively cheap these days, just go out a buy an up to date 250GB drive and get on with your life.

Except for you, Wolfey. You keep working on the procedure. When it becomes a cold day in *hell*, you'll have a HDD that will be worth millions.

What a most obscure statement and entirely illogical.
Are you suggesting that I shall be proceeding south on my demise?
Hell is a mere figment of a frightened mind and does not exist and even if it did and became "cold" it would only be because they had not paid their gas bill.
Alternatively should Hell really exist then that is where I shall be.
I will however engage Charon in pleasant conversation and ask him his opinon with regard to freezing hdd's.

I was not doing as you thought. I was merely projecting a possible business venture. However, when the time comes, why would I want to go to heaven and be all alone.
I'd rather go to hell with the rest of my friends. Both of them!
