HI PCHF,
srry guys another question.
Since new the wifes comp has always seemed noisy, it whirs on start up, dies down then up again, this is also evident when she is using the comp,I also notice that the whirring noise ( its not actually a humming noise) increases in pitch to the extent that I can hear it in an adjoining room, allowing i have visual site of the comp from where I am sitting and the other rooms door is open. This is more evident when the lad is playing a game which he plays through the net and using messenger at the same time, basically when u ask the comp to work that bit harder the noise increases.
Should I maybe take the covers off and see if I can pinpoint the noise to a certain area as it would only be the fans or HDD I would imagine as they are the only working components I can think of.
Just curious if there is a direction I could take here and if anyone has had simular noises enabling me to focus on that specific area.
From memory comp is an Acer,2.8GHz,256 mb,80gb HDD partitioned, windows XP home.
Thankyou

Hi guys...
It's most likely to be the CPU fan, but it could also be the video card, chipset, chasis, or power supply fans I'd say stick your ear next to them to see where it's coming from

It would certainly be a good idea to check for noisy/clogged fans-- loud drives (bearing "on the way out") Especially if you can hear it in the next room
The fans would be the most likely culprit-- PC's require cleaning every so often-- I clean out the fans about once a month-- you'll be amazed at how much junk is accumulated. Heat is the enemy-- and clogged fans can't cool properly. You can open the case and run the PC to localize exactly what is making the noise--(keep your hands out while it's plugged in) but in the case of clogged vents -- it's usually quite obvious. If you suspect the CPU fan is going --you need to get that fixed... damage to your processor could result. If you think it's a drive-bearing-- back-up all your personal files NOW. Then you can replace the drive/install your OS and other software-- and reinstall your pictures/music/videos later.
