Pending: my pc freezes after icons have loaded

hi,

i have xp home editon sp2.
my pc freezes after my icons on my desktop have loaded. the programs on the taskbar eg. quicktime are about to start loading then it just freezes. in avg testing the ntoskrnl.exe had "changed" status. does this mean anything? any help is much appreciated, thanks.

Suggest you boot from your Windows install CD and do the R option to repair the bootup process. Let us know if that works. If not, we will try other options.

hi thanks for the reply,

when i get to that it asks for the administrator password and ive never set one so i dont know what it wants me to do

Here's how to create and use a password reset disk. You can use a password reset disk to gain access to your computer if you forget your password.
How to create and use a password reset disk for a computer in a domain in Windows XP

If that cannot be worked out, this may help:
