Question Problem after reformatting

So I decided to reformat my laptop. It was working fine I just wanted to get rid of all the stuff on it so I can use it for just a few things.

My problem is everytime I try to reformat it -- it works fine, I follow the directions, ect. but by the time windows is up and going I can't install things properly, windows constantly malfunctions, I repeatedly get this type of error:

"The file or directory C:\$MFT is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility."

I run chkdsk and stuff but it doesn't do anything. Something is seriously up. I have reformated it TWICE and gotten the same thing. I can't put drivers in because after I try to put them on i get like 10 of them to be "failures" after they have been installed... I even try to install them again but it doesn't work.

This computer is around 2 years old. Runs XP SP1, AMD, 512mb, 40g mem, Compaq Presario 2100.

If I can get some feedback it would be great... I really can't do anything right now because I can't install stuff really at all because half way through something's "corrupt."

So should i try to reformat again? And if I do should I not follow the instructions and do it some other way? Thanks... Also it was working fine before I reformated and I had reformated about 2-3 times before this reformation and everything was FINE.

Edit: I also noticed I can no longer create files... a text file for example

Hi and Welcome to PCHF

This computer is around 2 years old
Runs XP SP1, AMD, 512mb, 40g mem, Compaq Presario 2100
Model release was 2003. depends on when you bought it of course

You have a retail copy of XP? Or a bootable CD?
If so-- you need to run ChkDsk from outside of Windows.
Very clear instructions here:
How to Run a chkdsk :: Schrock Innovations Free Help Article :: hard drive repair

I would also suggest-- if you get windows booting/installing right again, that you immediately back up any critical files -- and get HD tune to test your drive -- it could be on the road to ruin.

Free download here:

HD Tune great indicator of disc health.
