Default DVD RW drive not burning DVD's

when i put a new DVD-R in my DVD RW drive its says there is no free space in them and cant copy any thing to it. but i can copy files to CD fine and read DVDs fine how can i fix this ? thanks

What format is the drive?+ or - or +- Becuase disks have different formats.
