Yeah, gates and a buddy of his sold IBM something called QDOS that was so identical to CP/M (Kildall's OS) that the first 30 something function calls were identical. The odds on that are, to say the least, rather high. You can google for Kildall and read his story, his odd death, the whole shooting match. Really good read.

Well, I indeed read a short story about kildall and to think that Gates started his 'empire' with a rip-off of another OS!!! (or do I make a wrong conclusion?)

no, that's pretty much the moral of the story.....it all revolves around kildall, IBM, Q-DOS, a seattle company that Gates had a friend working at, who in turn wrote Q-DOS, and some rather interesting business deals.
