Hi! I'm having trouble running my PC. The problem is random crashing which can occur
anywhere in a period of seconds or even hours after switching on and loading up the computer. The crashing seems to have no trigger whatsoever and occurs if the system is in use or idle but results in the computer logging off before complete switch off without restarting. Prior to the crash, a warning box appears showing 'Calc.exe' and a second showing something along the lines of '.dll initialization failed'. These syptoms have continued and warning boxes showing a whole range of different .exe or .dll files have since continued to appear just before the system crashes. Other examples of this include iexlpore.dll. The opening of my internet explorer window also occurs along with the appearance of the warning boxes. What's also odd is that if the computer is restarted, the system's sound is often automatically muted and i have to return to the control panel to switch it back on....this problem is extremely frustrating and any help as to how to solve this problem would be great! I've since run adware and removed something called Alexis which has only made the situation worse with my computer crashing only seconds into reaching the desktop on restart. Run a Windows Update and get SP2 for XP, that should solve your problems. XP SP1 is no longer supported by Microsoft. Click here to go to Windows Update: Microsoft Windows Update

Hi and thanks for the reply. The problem is that my computer wont remain on long enough for me to install the update :s .... should i try safe mode?

Yes, try booting up in safe mode and run a Windows Update. To download SP2 it will take quite some time depending on your connection. If not, you will need to put SP2 on a CD and you can install it that way.
