Default Operating system problems

Hi i have having problems with my computer's operating system, I'm running windows xp pro and i can't get logged in, It go's as far as loading windows, then when i type in my password and click on log on nothing happens, The mouse pointer disappears and there is nothing i can do. I have went into the recovery console and done a chkdsk /p to check for bad sectors on the hard disk, but it says my disk is ok, so I'm lost at this point what to do next. I don't want to format the disk and reinstall the OS because i don't want to loose any data as i don't have it backed up.

Try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the login screen to see if the classic login screen works.

No nothing happens when i pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del, I think there are corrupt files in the registry or the H.D.D is faulty because i got a message saying (The registry cannot load the hive (file):\SystemRoot\System32\Config\Software or its log or alternate). I have all my files backed up to partition D if that can help?

Hi, give this a shot:
  • Turn on the computer.
  • While it is booting up, press F8 repeatidly.
  • When you get the menu, select Command Prompt.
  • When you get to the command prompt, insert your windows xp install disk and type in sfc /scannow.
Good luck,
Adam
