Default I knew SP.2 was a mistake!

I've recently upgraded windows XP to service pack 2 (thought it was about time lol) and there was no problems. The problem started when I did a virus scan on zonealarm. I had 4 infections which is quite unusual for me but I thought nevermind and deleted/quarantined them.

I restarted my pc and everything, for want of a better phrase, went **** up! Everytime I click a program this is what happens. So say I wanted to use windows media player I'd have to click on it, the browse menu would come up and then I'd have to activate it through the browse menu. This means that stuff like zonealarm wont start when windows starts.

I dont even know where to begin to start in fixing this.

Hi Redders,
Welcome to The PCHF.
I think to start lets check the windows o/s and make sure that your files are ok.
Insert your XP cd into the CD Drive
Click on "start"
Click on "run"
in the module type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and a space between sfc and /)
the press "enter"
this should check and fix any missing/corrupt windows files
