Default dropdown menus

for the last couple of day, on my laptop,whenever i click on something or rightclick on something that where bring up a dropdown menu, i just get the outline of a box instead of a list of options. the options only appear as i move the cursor over where they should. be

it doesnt matter which program im using at the time, outlook, ie, or just on hte desktop, i havent been messing with it , installing anything or anything like that. it just started out of the blue. i use windows xp media edition

Sounds like your missing a windows file. Insert your Windows Reinstall disk into the CD-ROM drive and go to start > run and type in sfc /scannow. It will check to see if there are any missing Windows files and if there are it will replace them from the CD.
