Default CMD Ipconfig..........now computer doesn't work

Hi, I'm BigDummy and I"m still computer illiterate after all these years. I have a problem that I can't fix. I had a problem with my DSL and while on the phone with tech support they had me type in" cmd ipconfig" into RUN on my start menu. Well of course after a short while my computer froze and I couldn't Ctrl/alt/delete it free so I hit the power button in the tower.......well that seems to have been a pretty bad thing to do. Now I have a black screen with white type that starts with "We apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully....etc. then it gives me a list of choices ...Safe Mode/ Safe Mode with networking/safe mode with command prompt/ last known good config/ start windows normally. Well I hit the arrow key to highlight any one of them and I get nothing. I then get the Windows XP logo page followed by a quick (very quick) flash of a blue screen with something written on it......can't read it because it's only a flash. Then I see Norton Go Back then my tower makes a noise like it's trying to do something then the process starts all over again.........one giant loop. Right back to the black screen with the white lettering and it then goes through the whole process again. I'm sure this is an easy one for you guys but for me........well........they don't call me BigDummy for nothing . Thanks for any help you guys can give me. P.S... I'm running windows XP, the computer is a HP Pavilion 750n....the rest of the stuff about the computer I'm not to sure about as I can't get on it to check it. Is my information still available from the last time I posted?

Hi Bigdummy, welcome to the PCHF.

I highly doubt the cmd ipconfig you typed in caused the problems your having.

That command gives you your IP address, and makes no changes to it. I'd say it was just co-incidence that it happened when you typed it in.

Unfortunately we really need to see that Blue Screen to see what's going on properly. The first thing I'd try - is pull the power cable out of the back of the computer, and hit the power button 10 times (while the cable is unplugged). Plug the cable back in, and see if you can boot up now.

Let me know.

MadMatt/GarHar, when I turn the computer on I get the message I told you. If I don't select anything it times out (30seconds) and windows tries to start......and back to the black screen. If I choose safe mode or any of the other options I get a long list of something like the following : multi (0)disk(0)partition/windows system32drivers/ft disk. I tried unplugging it like you said Gar and hitting the power button.....no luck. Now I'm not seeing the blue screen flash. When I turn the computer on I get the windows logo, then Norton Go Back logo timing out, then the black screen with white lettering. If I dont' do anything it just continues to try with no luck. Any other ideas? Thanks

look like in this case you will have to do a repair install of your XP

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.
1.
When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
2.
Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.
3.
Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.
4.
In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
5.
Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
6.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.
