Well, I made a backup of my laptop's HDD with DriveXML and then I restored it onto a fresh HDD in my desktop computer, and I tried booting but it kept freezing, so I popped in the XP disc and tied doing a repair install but it keeps asking for the SP1 disc and an ASMS file. I searched google and came up with some Microsoft pages bout deleting reg keys, so I did that, but the problem still persists.
The reason why I did it is because I don't want to copy over some 50,000 database entries and redo the entire setup of the computer specially since I'd have to spend 2 days on it doing that and the laptop's content gets updated daily and I'd never get to the bottom of it (neither do I really have the time to attempt it)

Hi Darklord,

I've had a look around it looks like it maybe related to the cd/dvd rom drive in the pc do you have another one you can try. Read this link its similar to your problem but not the same not much info out there

This one is giving me a real headache, I've tried 4 differnt CD/DVD drives, as well as using Sp1, Sp2, XP Home, a copy of the I386 directory, a copy of the contents of the I386 directory CDs and it still won't go.

I used the method here: "The file 'Asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed" error message when you install Windows XP and that didn't go either. I have nothing plugged except my screen and my keyboard, no mouse (don't have any extra ones >.>)

How do you do a directory listing in command prompt? (To see if my CD drive is listed as D drive correctly and all)

To get to the directory type cd DIR. Example: cd d:

Then to get the directory listing use dir.
