hi,

i'm trying to return my windows XP pc back to factory settings, but cannot for the life of me remember how to do it. i vaguely remember having to do it a few years back on an old pc, and used a floppy disk? i don't have a floppy disk drive now, obviously, and i didn't get any master set of disks when i bought the pc as everything was pre-installed.

help please?

Hi retrocircles,

My guess is that it's a HP/Dell/IBM/Gateway style machine that was bought off a shelf?

If this is the case, you'll need to contact the manufacturer of the computer and say "can i have some restore discs please?" they'll send 'em out to you

Will cost a small amount of money...but worth it.

Hello there retrocircles, if you can give me the make of your PC and the model number ill have a look around for some info for you. Chances are, you have an images on a seperate part of your hard disk called a partition. Chances are you will have an image on there which contains the OS, drivers and all the pre loaded software that was put on at the factory.

hi there

the PC is a compaq presario 1440 with an AMD athlon 64 processor 3400+ (i think there was one with intel too). on the pc itself i have my usual C: drive and a presario_RP D: drive. the D: is the partition but i cannot access it as it just comes up with a popup stating 'Recovery Partition. Warning! This area of your hard drive contains files used for your pc recovery. Do not delete or alter these files.' I have just clicked to explore this file, there is a padlock icon called 'recovery'. i cannot open this.

Hope this info is useful. if you need any further info let me know.

cheers
