So i am still none the wiser as to how it happend, a lot poorer, and quite hacked off. i think my hard drive must have had a built in 4 year self destruct feature put in by microsoft to make me buy a new computer!
anyway, just thought id post the outcome and thanks again for trying to help way back when i still had hope!
That's no consolation when you lose your data, I know...but it just emphasizes the need for regular backups. Just your personal stuff-- everything else can be replaced. You can set it up to be automatic-- so you don't have to think of it.
There are almost surely still recoverable files on the old drive... but when you get into "forensic data recovery services" --the costs outweigh the benefits.
