Default [Resolved]XP will not start after freeze up

My computer stopped responding so I hit the reset button. Now when I try to reboot it says windows failed to start and asks me how I want to restart, last known good configuration, start normally, or start in safe mode. I've tryed every mode and it just keeps going back to this screen. What do I do now?

It sounds like you will have to do a repair install, do you have a windows disk?

Yes I do. Will I likely loose the content of the hard drive? Do I just choose the repair install option on the windows disk?

No you shouldn't loose the content of your hard disk.

Boot the CD from start up and press enter (DO NOT enter recovery console) then select your windows installation and hit R for recovery install.

Do I need to do anything before I insert the disk to insure it will boot from the CD?

Enter your bios and ensure CD is set to first boot device, HD second.

I don't understand. When I hit R for recovery, it says I have entered the recovery console and asks which windows install do I want to repair. How do I do a recovery without entering the recovery console?
Thanks
