Default difficulty turning off PC

I’m nunnig home edition XP SP2 on a Compaq

I attempt to quit, to turn off the computer by placing the cursor on the START icon but then when I move the cursor off the START icon the icons that allow me to TURN OFF THE COMPUTER disappear. It’s driving me nuts. HELP!!

After more then few attempts the icons to turn off the PC remain visible on the screen and I can quit. But it's **** frustrating.
Any answer out there?

howdy eagleamerican and welcome to PCHF,

For now lets see if it is a hardware deal

Download the program below and see if you can turn off your pc with it..
Downloading Auto Shutdown Genius

Also go to the taskbar...Right click on it click properties..and make sure "auto hide the taskbar" is not checked..

Hi welcome to the forum You could try a forced shut down to by going to start run and typing shutdown -f -s and click ok if it is software causing it the will stop the program and shut the PC down
