Default Really slow to start

When my computer starts up, it takes about five minutes to get past the screen with the Pentium 4 logo. Then the Windows logo screen shows and takes about the normal amount of time, but then it goes to a black screen for a few more minutes. Once Windows has loaded, everything runs at a normal speed.

The last thing I was doing on the computer before this started was playing an old game (Nuclear Strike). I had to download something from dgVoodoo to get it to work on XP (I downloaded version 1.40+). When I was playing, it froze and I couldn't ALT+TAB, ALT+F4 or ALT+CTRL+DEL out of it, so I turned the computer's power off. When I turned it back on, it had this problem.

I've uninstalled the game and deleted all the dgvoodoo files, but it's still slow.

howdy Asi and welcome top PCHF,

Download bootvis from this site

Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP (it is number 31) and run it and under tools it will say Improve boot times..Click that and you will have to reboot.

Then do this

Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).

Locate the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\SessionManager\MemoryManagement\PrefetchParamete rs

Make sure you backup the keys by exporting them to a .reg file.

On the EnablePrefetcher value, change the setting from 3 to 5 (decimal).

Close the registry editor.

Restart your computer.

This will make windows boot allot faster

Thanks, but that didn't do any good. It still takes about ten minutes to start.

did you download the program as well? Or did you just do the registry entries?

Download cleanup below and when you start the program click options and make sure you uncheck "delete prefecth files"

CleanUp! - Downloads

Then download Diskeeper and Defrag your pc.. It only has a 30 day trial but you only need it once or twice..

Diskeeper Corporation – Download Main Page

I read the post before you edited it, so I only tried the registry entries. I've downloaded the program now, but it doesn't say "improve boot times" under tools.

I just tried the other two things you suggested. They took hours and didn't help.
