Default [Answered] Basic Installation Question

Hi, apologies for the basic nature of this question but I really need to know ...

I've bought XP second-hand from someone on ebay. I've just recieved the disk in the mail which included a note from the seller giving me the product key, but the note also informs me that they don't have the licence.

Am I right in thinking that this disc is absolutely useless to me as that copy of XP will still be registered as being installed on their hard drive?

Thanks for any help.

Hi the void,

Welcome to PCHF. Don't worry, it's not basic. Licensing does vary slightly between manufacturers and products.

Legally, as long as that license is not being used on another PC, you are free to use it on your PC. It is illegal to do so otherwise. I can't say I would personally buy a second hand copy of Windows on e-bay, as you only have the word of the seller.
