Default [Resolved] IE 7 problems.

I'm having some issues with IE7 and wanted to know if it's safe to uninstall it and then re-install it.

I have some programs that use IE to browse so I can't just change over to using Firefox ( wish I could )

These programs have sarted behaving strange and I think it's becuase of either an IE addon that's not compatible or I may have inadvertantly deleted some files needed for IE when uninstaling some software that said " these shared files are no longer needed do you want to delete them" ( or some such message.)

Normally I leave those sort of files on but this last week I did delete some and I've no idea what they were.

Also I can't seem to access the system restore feature in Windows XP since all these problems started. The hard drive has 12.2GB free so I don't see it being anything to do with not enough free space.

Oh and I've done all the usual scans for viruses and trojans e.t.c. my system is kept clean from all the junk files and temp files that clutter most PC"s

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks.

KM

Heya Keyman,

It won't hurt anything to uninstall IE7 then reinstall it. When you go to add/remove programs and uninstall IE7, it just rolls back to IE6.

Hope that helps

Hey Wadd, thanks for the reply.

I have had bad experiences trying to remove IE 7 on my wife's system one time but that may have been becuase it was the beta version.... guess it left me wary trying to do it on my system even though I have the full version.

Would it mess up if I just tried installing without uninstalling?

Any ideas on why I can't do a system restore ?

I do not think Windows will allow you to install IE7 over itself. It will probably report that you already have a newer version than the one you are trying to install. Recommend Uninstalling IE7 to allow the rollback to IE6. Then, you can decide if you want IE7 installed again or not.

Good Luck

Thank you for the advice.

Do you have any idea how I can resolve the system restore problem?

Or are there too many possibilities

I downloaded your SIW.exe but I don't know if that will help or what to look for.

If you have a problem with the Restore Point function and want to rollback your system files, you can put your XP Installation CD into the CD Drive and boot up off of the CD. When asked, you can select Restore Point from there.

However, as to the reason for your inability to Restore from within Windows, I will need more information.

If you want help on this point, then suggest you open a Notepad file.
Step by step as you click on something, write it in the Notepad file.
Keep it simple. Example: "Clicked on Start button", etc.
This is the only way I can help you. I can't look over your shoulder.

A couple of questions I want you to answer,
after you get to the "System Properties" window.

The System Restore tab should be selected.
1. What drives to you have? C: drive, D: drive, what?
2. What drives do you see in the window?
3. What does the "Status" say for each drive?
If you can, click on the C drive
Then, click on "Settings..."
4. What does the "Disk space to use:" read?
It should say something like 12% (9157 MB).
Yours need not say the exact same thing.

If you can't answer any of these questions, say "can't answer".

When you are through, save the Notepad file so you can access it again.
In other words, remember what directory you saved it in?

Now, log back into PCHF, REPLY to this message, and paste all the information you wrote in the Notepad file into the Message window.

Good Luck...I'll be looking for your reply.
