Answer: C: D: Disk2_Vol1(k)
2. What drives do you see in the window?
ANswer: As above.
3. What does the "Status" say for each drive?
Answer: Monitoring
If you can, click on the C drive
Then, click on "Settings..."
4. What does the "Disk space to use:" read?
It should say something like 12% (9157 MB).
ANSWER: Max 12% ( 8962)
Good.

Now, tell me what it is that you can not do?
Can you create a Restore Point?
Can you Restore from an earlier point?

No, when I go to system restore I get an error message saying system Restore application has encountered a problem and needs to close.

If I click on what the report contains I get this.

If I understand you correctly, you

click on Start
click on Help and Support
select Restore my computer to an earlier time
click on Next>
click on a date to revert back to
click on Next>

Can you go this far, or at what point does that error notification appear?

Click Start
Programs
accessories
system restore
Then I get a blank window, with the error message showing ontop of the blank system restore window.

I don't get far enough into it to set a time and date.
Also the help and support was taken off the system when I was doing some XP tweaking tips, I was told it wasn't needed and could always be turned back on.

Although I don't know how.

Turning off the Help functions is not a good idea, ever.
I suggest you turn that function back on.
How ever you turned it off, turn it back on.
**I can't help you there.**
Then, follow with the steps I outlined using the Help and Support.
If, after that, you still have a problem, let us know.

Good Luck...

Start/run/services.msc/enter/ scroll down to help and support/right click on the listing"help and support"/properties/auto start/click button for dependencies if any start them too//close app

if you keyboard has a Windows-key you can open the run dialog with Windows/R combination --quicker.

thanks guys, I know I turned the help & support a good few months ago and have never had any problems.

I came across this while searching Google on how to turn it back on.

Help and Support

Enables Help and Support Center to run on this computer. If this service is stopped, Help and Support Center will be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
Comment: I don't find this service useful, other than sucking up resources. If you know how to use Google, I'd disable it.

I guess it's a matter of personal prefference as to whether to have it on or not but I don't think it's got anything to do with my current problems still I'll turn it back on again for now.

Ok Help & Support has been turned back on and is working.
Allthough attempting to access the system restore function brought up the same error message as before.
