Default HELP NEEDED - "svchost.exe"

My computer freezes all the time. Then I finally found out why?
When I open the Task Manager and click the Processes, I noticed that "svchost.exe" uses almost 99% of CPU resources and 100MB memory usage. I tried to end this process "svchost.exe" and continue what I am doing and my PC started to function well. However I really need to "kill" the process everytime I boot up.
My question: I have at least 7 "svchost.exe" on the Processes. Is these "exe" files really needed by my PC to function well or these are VIRUSES.
Please advise.
Thank you.

svchost basically runs dll services, If you want to find out exactly what it's running I suggest using Process Explorer.

If it's just now and again then it's probably windows update, if it's all the time it may be a dodgy dll/bad sys file.

You got it on the head Lebowski. Its windows update alright. But this one makes my PC freeze. What can I do to correct this problem. I can only use my PC if I stop this "svchost.exe". Thank you for the reply.

It's fairly common apparently though I haven't been affected by it myself, there is an apparent solution here
let me know if it works

Problem resolved!!! Lebowski thanks for the help!!! I dont think this is an isolated problem here. 6 out of 10 PC here is affected by it. It is only unnoticed because of faster processors and larger memory cards.
