Default Smartphone Data Recovery

Hey again PCHF.

I'm desperately trying to restore an image I deleted from my phone of my late girlfriend and I was wondering if there is any possible way to do this as I've seen software for restoring files for hard-drives and I'm of the opinion that my smartphone (O2 Xda Orbit) can't be that different. The phone comes up as a 'Mobile Device' when connected to my PC and has Windows Mobile on it. Any other information about it can be provided as needed.

Please tell me this is possible, it's very important to me and I'm a fool for losing it in the first place.

Please also bear in mind that spending money on this venture would not be ideal. I was thinking maybe if there was some way of getting it to register as a hard-drive rather than a Mobile Device I could use the software I have already to get at it. I don't know though, and that's why I'm here!

Regards.

Was it stored on the internal memory or an MicroSD card?

If it was an external memory card I recommend using a memory card reader and mounting it with that and try to recover data using PhotoREC or whichever file recovery tool you feel comfortable with

Internal memory is a little different as you may run into a few problems, such as what filesystem does it use? there are a couple of ways to mount the internal storage such as an application called WM5orage you should be EXTREMELY careful using such an application though, or anything to do with the internal storage as not only could it 'brick' your phone and make it expensive to repair but worse, fixing it (reflashing) would potentially make it almost impossible to recover any data off it since the data will be overwritten

I recommend talking to some people on a forum dedicated to supporting such devices as they are much more likely to be able to help.

If you can get access to the internal storage I recommend making a disk image and mounting a COPY of that to try and do the recovery, I say this for a couple of reasons:
  • If you make a mistake, you have a copy and your data isn't lost forever or very expensive to recover
  • There is VERY little chance of 'bricking' your phone
This is about all the advice I can offer, In short, treat the internal storage VERY carefully, if you can get access to it and try and seek the advice from a forum that deals with such devices.

Good luck, hope you get it sorted
