Default windows cannot start up due to a missing fiil

hi guys. please take some time to look through my problem. i am really desperate for a solution for my problem. i cannot afford to reformat my comp ( though it is the guaranteed solution ) because of major files in my comp.

few days ago, my computer went fine. was doing my stuff, watching videos on youtube. then today, when i turned on my computer, i was greeted by this message .

Windows is unable to start up because the following file is missing or corrupted
C:\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair the file by running Windows Installation with the original CD-ROM

press R at the first screen to start.

well the message is smth like that. just remembered by memory.

i dun wanna call the microsoft hotline because i have to pay money. and its real expensive... about 25 bucks.. omg.

please help me. i am able to access the recovery console but i just duno how to use it. a constructive resolution will be greatly appreciated.

Hi xia and welcome to PCHF,

Can you give us the Make and Model of your system. We should then be able to get you going.

Do what the screen message said.
Bootup with the Windows XP CD in it's drive and instead of installing Windows, use the "R" option to repair the start up procedure.

Read the bootup screen carefully. You do NOT want to press the install button.

Good Luck

If you read the directions, it said, "You do NOT want to press the install button." **NOT**

You press the R key. R R R R R R. NOT the Install button.

OK! Pressing the "R" key initiates the repair function for the startup protocol.

A repair install isn't the same as a reformat, you won't loose any of your files it just reinstalls the critical stuff.
