Increase the master volume on the line in. Goto start/contol panel/sounds and audio devices/volume/device volume/advanced/on the master volume make sure the line in slider is at max and the mute box is unticked.

Try updating the driver for the sound card. GOTO start/control panel/sytem/on the hardware tab select device manager.in the list find "sound, video and game contollers, click on the box and a further tree showing installed devices will appear, you can right click these and an option to update drivers will appear. Do this for all audio devices. See if this helps. If not try a reinstall. If that doesnt work, it could be as you say a broken connector, could you borrow another soundcard?
Another option is to visit the windows update site, you can let Microsoft scan your pc for any updates. You will then be presented with a list of updates. On this list see if any are related to audio options, if they are download and instal.
