Howdy Bow and Welcome to PCHF
I can answer the furst question but the second may be hard since I do not live in the UK..I have heard Orange is descent though Right click on your desktop..Click properties..Then click apperance.. Click the advanced tab, and in the scroll box make your icons a smaller size this should help both issues..

ok right click the dektop again, and go to the settings tab, and move your slider to the right.. This will make everything smaller.. Also go to advaned in this tab and make sure you icon dpi is on normal size 96 dpi

I'm not sure if orange is connected 24/7 but you could always get a router that would keep you 'signed in'
Personally I was on blueyonder and the service was fantastic, no outages very speedy then they got bought out by Virgin and it's now called Virgin media and since it switch they've had proxy/dns issues everywhere and thankfully that's clearning up, if it continues to be OK I recommend virgin if you can get cable in your area and they will soon be rolling out 20mb/sec for £37 which is a little pricy

I second the Virgin media, I'm with there 2mb broadband, and i get excellent pings in game
. Although I have heared of people having problems with them, but I've had none.
