Default in boot process it wants me to log on to msn

Hi and sorry for the long title just could not put it in a shorter term.
I was given alaptop from my sis in law and when it boots it becomes very slow and wants me to sign onto msn and 1) its not connected to the web 2) I have tried everything except the right way to turn the darn thing off.
btw, it is a IBM thinkpad 600 running W2K Pro 256 mb ram and other issues that I am working out , just everytime I have to reboot this darn msn thing pops up.
can someone help Pleasethe sketchman

Open MSN, go into tools>options and there should be something along the lines of 'Start msn messenger on startup' (I cannot verify this as I'm not using windows at the moment, but its something like that) uncheck that.
