Default Task bar freezes

Lately my Pentium 4 running Windows XP Home, sp 2 has developed a weird problem:
it boots up with no problem, but after startup is complete the task bar is frozen: nothing happens when you click or double click on any of the tray icons and nothing pops up when you click on the Start menu.

Oddly enough, desktop icons are not affected. I can run programs normally and access anything that already has a desktop icon. I can even go into My Computer and then into Program Files and run otherwise inaccessible programs by using the .exe icons.

That's about it...it's a mystery and a bit of a headache. Anybody ever run into this before.

Thanks, in advance.

look pretty clean. Are you experiencing any problems? There are some abandoned files that can be cleaned. up. please close all other applications, start hjt again, click 'perform system scan only', place a tick next to the following and click 'fix checked'

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Reboot, and you should be good to go. Again, though, what problems were you experiencing?

thanks,

v

I did as you suggested, but I still have the same problem, which is this (repeated from my original post):

Lately my Pentium 4 running Windows XP Home, sp 2 has developed a weird problem:
it boots up with no problem, but after startup is complete the task bar is frozen: nothing happens when you click or double click on any of the tray icons and nothing pops up when you click on the Start menu.

Oddly enough, desktop icons are not affected. I can run programs normally and access anything that already has a desktop icon. I can even go into My Computer and then into Program Files and run otherwise inaccessible programs by using the .exe icons.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
