Default [Fixed] PC will reboot if you try to logon

Hello All, My friend has a WinXP desktop PC that was running good unitll yesterday. I suggested running the program CleanUp on his computer as I do regularly on mine.
So we downloaded it, and ran it on his PC. well it ran and ran and ran. He had so much junk it was still going after over 25 minutes and over 2Gb of removed files. He got frustrated and restarted the computer while cleanup was running . Now the computer boots up to the logon screen fine, but if you click the user name (PC has only 1 user account) it will reboot. It will work good in safe mode with both user names (safe mode also shows Administrator user account).
I found this article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310396 from Microsoft but I don't thnk it applies to us because we can get to the logon screen. It’s only when I click the user name that it reboots.
I also ran CHKDSK in safe mode. but the problem is still there.
Thanks in advance for any help

I just tried System File Checker (sfc.exe) according to the instructions in your link, but we still have the same problem.

When selecting safe mode did you try last known good configuration?

I tried last known good configuration. and now it boots a little longer..
Before it would reboot 3- 4 sec. after i clicked the user name,
now after using the last known good configuration the desktop shows up but it still reboots, after about 30- 40 seconds.

Is there a way to rebuild the user account? Maybe that’s what is corrupted.

I have an idea
What if I create an new user in safe mode and then log in to that account when I restart. Is that possible?

Try logging into the administrator account if it doesnt have a password. On the welcome screen press ctrl-alt-del twice to get to the logon box and type in Administrator and leave the password blank.

See how that goes.
