Default [Answered] destination drive name confusion after installing new drive

I had installed an external hard drive on my computer many months ago, and I recently had problems involving the destination drive.

Problems arose with the destination drive name for the newly installed drive.

I have an external harddrive which connects via USB, and had assumed the destination drive name of “E”. However, something happened (not sure what I did), and now it is under the name of "F". This changed all my shortcuts to files on the harddrive, of course, and wasn’t really a problem. The problem is that a couple of my programs won’t run now. When I try to uninstall them so that I can reinstall them, it says that “whatver” file can’t be found, but doesn’t give the option to browse. I tried everything I could to no avail.

I even tried just redownloading the programs, but I always got an error message when trying to install, saying there wasn’t enough space on “drive E”, DESPITE the fact that I pointed the setup to an entirely different spot.

When I try to download certain programs it goes through the "E" drive and I can't change it to go through my external ("F").

How can I get rid of the "E" drive and have certain prgrams go through the "F"?

Hello Brendan,

Welcome to PCHF.

This does completely depend on what was done in the first place, and what software you used to do it. You speak of shortcuts being changed to files, which doesn't seem to make sense to me. If you just need to change the drive letter back, all you need to do is go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management. Right click on the desired drive, and Change Drive Letter or Paths. Select your desired drive letter, which will work as no other device has assumed that letter.

EDIT: Marked as answered.
