Unhappy High CPU usage with Norton 2006 Internet Security

I have an issue with my CPU usage on my PC with Norton 2006 Internet Security. The problem started yesterday after a routine live update. Maxes out at 100%!!

I de-installed the program and the CPU speed drops back to below 20% in Task manager. I then re-installed the program only to have the same issue again. I have had the program for 60 days without issue. I contacted Norton via on line help to no avail. I de-installed the program a second time and guess what? CPU is back down below 20%. Any advice for me?

Hi and Welcome....

Advice ? Dump em.

Check Point ZoneAlarm - ZoneAlarm FREE Download

AVG Free Advisor: AVG Anti-Virus Free

If you try these and you like them enough -- you can upgrade-- it's not necessary .... they work just fine. You just get the automatic updates when paid. Use 1/3 the system resources-- and have better threat detection. for BOTH
ZA will pop up a bunch of program alerts @ first -- it needs to learn your set up.Takes a bit of gettin' used to. Good thing about it-- it will stop things inbound OR outbound (in case of a Trojan/Keylogger)
AVG just does it's quiet job... very well.

Hello ih8bills, I have seriously considered your recommendation based on time lost trying to resolve a problem that may clearly be out of my hands. I cannot help but feel “slighted” by Norton if in fact the issue turns out to be within the software. Hopefully others on this forum will chime in their $.02 with similar experiences or additional solutions. Thanks for the feedback.

Well Norton is definitely the problem, Norton is a well-known resource hog and slows down your computer a lot. I suggest what ih8bills has recommended, i use that setup and dont have any problems.

I switched 5 years ago-- never regretted it once. I had a problem... contacted "Symantec Tech Support"--never even got an answer--I said
Norton Products can also be difficult to fully remove -- it gets into many "corners" of your OS.
This.... put out by Norton can be of help:

Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Be sure to reboot.

It would also be prudent to run a registry-cleaner like the free Easy Cleaner
Official ToniArts software pages

and reboot again before installing anything else.
Differing AV/ Firewall programs can often end up fighting each other-- in stead of protecting you.

Just a side note but not totally off topic.

Anyone find it interesting that one of the co-founders of Symantec (who owns the Norton Line) left the company to become a professional poker player?

I also suggest you leave the company mate. AVG Free has worked fine for me for more than 3 years now and even the free version has the automatic updates.

I've never used Zone Alarm on my own machine personally, I'm content with Windows Firewall myself, though I have NEVER heard anyone credibly gripe about it, which means something to me.
