Default windows media player avi error

Hi all! I am new to the site so it's good to be here!

I experience a little problem with windows medial player 11.

Recently, and after I have installed-unistalled some programs (like avi to vcd etc.), I try to open with wmp11 an avi file and I get the usual error message "windows media payer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and the error report says "appname: wmplayer.exe, appver: 11.0.5721.5145 ModName: unknown, ModVer: 0.0.0.0 offset: 00000000".

When I try to play an audio file or a wma file everything works fine. But when I try to open an avi or an mpeg file I get the above error message and then the wmp closes down.

Can anyone help? Do you know what is wrong and how can I fix it?
Everything was working perfectly before.
I thank you very much in advance for your assistance.

Welcome to the PCHF madvinegar

When that error comes up, does it give you the option of sending or not sending reports?
If so - try sending the report and see if they offer any kind of advice...or patches.

I tried this in the past with other errors but had no lack. That is why I am asking for your help, since I trust you experts more...
If someone has any idea about fixing the problem or has encountered the same problem, please advise.
